NotebookLM for students: playlists, chapters, sharing

NotebookLM is a private workspace: you add sources to a notebook, then ask it questions. YouTube Collector is built around the video itself, so a course playlist goes in at once and the notes come back as chapters you can click into the player, on pages anyone can open without an account.

The captions problem comes first

NotebookLM supports public YouTube videos that already have captions, user-uploaded or auto-generated, and it imports the text transcript. A recorded seminar with captions switched off cannot be added. Videos uploaded less than 72 hours ago may not import yet either, which bites if your lecturer posts the recording the night before a class.

One thing people get wrong about NotebookLM: there is no video length cap. A three-hour lecture is fine unless the caption file runs past 500,000 words. If your course videos are captioned, length is not your blocker.

Choose NotebookLM if…

…your reading list is the real work. PDFs, slides and your own lecture notes in one notebook, questioned together, with flashcards and quizzes off the back of them, is something a video tool does not replace. Same if you want an audio overview to listen to on the bus.

Choose YouTube Collector if the course is mostly video, you want the whole playlist in one go, and you want to skim chapters and jump to minute 34 rather than ask a question and wait.

FAQ

Can NotebookLM summarise a lecture with no captions? No. Captions have to exist on the video already. YouTube Collector transcribes on demand, so a video with captions off still works (that run is billed in credits).

Can I share notes with my study group? Both can share. A NotebookLM public link needs the viewer to have a Google account, and only the owner or an editor can create it. YouTube Collector's picks and video pages are plain public pages, so a link in a group chat just opens.

Can I put a whole course playlist in? In YouTube Collector, yes, one URL. In NotebookLM you add each video separately and stop at 50 sources per notebook on the free plan.

Do I need to pay to try it? No. Free for 30 videos, no card.
