NotebookLM YouTube timestamps vs a clickable chapter list
NotebookLM imports a YouTube video's text transcript and lets you explore it through inline citations. YouTube Collector gives you a transcript too, plus a numbered chapter outline you click to seek the player to that moment.
Two different ways back to the moment
Google's help page says that for a YouTube source, "only the text transcript of the video is imported." Google's launch post describes exploring it "through inline citations linked directly to the video's transcript." So you ask a question, get an answer, and follow a citation into the text.
YouTube Collector starts from the other end. Every video gets an overview, a chapter list with times, and key insights. Click a chapter and the player jumps there.
Both are useful. Citations are better when you already know what you're looking for. A chapter list is better when you're staring at a 90 minute video and want to find the four minutes worth watching.
Side by side
| NotebookLM | YouTube Collector | |
|---|---|---|
| Bulk playlist or channel import | Not in the supported source list. YouTube URLs are added one video at a time | Paste one playlist or channel URL and it imports in batches (paid plans) |
| Summaries with clickable timecodes | Inline citations linked to the transcript text | Chapter list with times; clicking seeks the in-app player |
| Search across everything saved | Chat inside one notebook | One search over your library and the community cache: titles, summaries, every word of the transcripts |
| Repurpose a video | Studio produces Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, Mind Maps and Reports | Redraft any video as a blog post, tweet thread or LinkedIn post |
| Community transcript cache | No | Yes, shared across users |
| Videos with no captions | Not supported. Captions are required, user uploaded or auto | On-demand AI transcript, billed in credits |
| Limits worth knowing | 50 sources free, 300 on Pro. No video length cap until the caption file passes 500,000 words. Videos uploaded in the last 72 hours may not be importable yet | Free plan covers 30 videos and 10 redrafts |
Choose NotebookLM if…
- Most of your sources are documents and video is the side dish. It handles PDFs, Docs, Slides, Sheets, ePub and web pages; we only do YouTube.
- You want Audio Overviews or Video Overviews. We don't make those.
- Fifty sources is plenty and you'd rather not add another tool.
Choose YouTube Collector if the video is the work: a back catalogue to bring in at once, chapters you can click, and one search across all of it.
FAQ
Does NotebookLM give you timestamps for YouTube videos? It imports the transcript and links its citations to it. The help pages don't document a chapter outline you can scan and click.
Can I use both? Yes, and plenty of people do. Export a transcript or summary as markdown and drop it into a notebook as a source.
What if the video has no captions? NotebookLM can't import it. We transcribe the audio instead, which costs credits.
Is there a free tier? Yes. 30 videos and 10 redrafts, no card. Pro is £3.99/month, Content Creator £14.99/month.
Try it
Paste a YouTube link and look at the chapter list. If it doesn't save you time, nothing lost.
